Frequently Asked Questions

About Our Products

Usually your dentist can give you a recommendation on the type of night guard you need. The type of guard you should purchase depends on your level of grinding.

The soft night guard is made for light grinders or those who clench their teeth at night. It's made from a soft, flexible, rubbery material and provides a cushiony barrier between the teeth. The soft night guard is approximately 1.5mm in thickness.

The hybrid night guard is our most popular product and it's made for moderate grinding . It is approximately 2mm thick and has a hard outer layer for durability and a soft inner layer for a comfortable fit. Many customers have found that this guard is the best combination of comfort and durability.

The hard night guard is the best option for heavy grinders with the most severe symptoms since it's the most durable. It is made from a durable elasticized acrylic material and is approximately 1.5mm thick. This special thermo-plastic material softens in warm water to allow for a comfortable fit.

The ultra-thin daytime guard is best for people who grind or clench their teeth during the day. It's made from a thin layer of acrylic and it's thin and less noticeable (approximately 1mm thick). However, it's generally not durable enough to hold up against night time grinding.

Not sure about how heavy of a grinder you are? The best way to find out is to consult your dentist directly. In most cases, heavy grinders experience severe symptoms and are aware that they grind heavily. If your dentist told you that you grind your teeth, but you weren't aware of it before, you are most likely a moderate grinder and the hybrid night guard would be the best choice. All our night guards are covered by a 1 year warranty. If you order a hybrid guard and it turns out you're a heavy grinder and you grind through the guard in less than a year, contact us and you can return the hybrid guard and change to the hard guard (you only need to pay for the price difference).

The upper guard is the default choice. We offer a choice of upper OR lower guard because some customers find it more comfortable to wear one vs. the other.

Most customers (over 90%) choose the upper guard. Most customers find the upper guard more comfortable since it doesn't get in the way of their tongue as much as the lower guard. You may opt for a lower guard if you prefer the fit or if you've had some dental work done (e.g. crowns, implants) and your dentist recommends a lower guard instead.

Usually, you only need either an upper OR a lower guard in order to protect against teeth grinding. Since the night guard sits between your upper & lower teeth, it functions as an effective protective barrier. Only one guard is needed, unless your dentist recommends otherwise.

How long a night guard lasts depends a lot on the severity of your grinding. Night guards can last anywhere between 6 months to a few years. All our night guards come with a 1 year warranty.

If the night guard cracks or breaks due to wear and tear during use and within the warranty period, please contact us and we'll replace it free of charge. The cracked and or damaged night guard must be returned to qualify for a replacement under the warranty.

Since we're a professional dental lab servicing dentists, we use the exact same materials as the night guards we craft for dentists.

The hard night guard is made from a firm plastic material called acrylic. The hybrid night guard is made from two layers of different materials: a hard acrylic outer layer and a vinyl soft inner layer. The soft night guard is made from a soft vinyl material. All materials are safety-approved and come from professional dental industry suppliers.

How Our Process Works

You will receive detailed instructions, with photos, in the home impression kit we send you to take your teeth impressions. The entire process only takes about 15 minutes.

The impression kit includes dental impression trays for upper and lower teeth, impression putty (with an extra set in case you need to do a re-take), and a pre-paid return envelope.

For more information about the impression taking process, you can check out our impression instruction video.

Don't worry if you mess up your impressions. We'll send you a new impression kit, free of charge, to retake your impressions. We'll also review your existing impression and include specific tips aimed at helping you take an accurate impression.

And of course, you're covered by our 60 Day 110% Money Back Guarantee for all orders!

Here at Pro Teeth Guard, we want to ensure the most comfortable fit for your night guard. We ask you to take both upper and lower teeth impressions for every night guard.

Since the night guard acts as a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, we need to account for how the teeth naturally come together when you bite down. With your opposing teeth impressions, we craft the opposing grooves in the night guard so that it fits perfectly between your teeth and provides you with the most comfortable fit.

The entire process from ordering, to getting an impression kit, to receiving your completed custom night guard usually takes around 3 - 4 weeks.

Orders are typically shipped within 1 business day. The time it takes to receive your kit in the mail will be 3 - 5 business days, depending on your location. We provide free shipping and all orders are shipped from California.

Once you receive your kit, please take your impressions and return them to the lab using the pre-paid return envelope. Once we receive your impressions, we will custom make your night guard within 7 - 11 business days and ship it to your address.

If you'd like to get the guard faster, you can upgrade to the paid USPS priority option for faster shipping times (2 days for most areas).

Please note: for Canadian customers, shipping times may be several days longer each way. As a result, the entire process usually takes around 4 to 5 weeks. Occassionally, Canadian customs may cause additional delays; however, you will be provided a tracking number so you can check the status of your package.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, we are operated by a professional dental lab in San Diego County, California that currently makes night guards for dentists.

We use the same materials and process for our online customers at ProTeethGuard.com. If you lived in Southern California and paid $400 (or more) for a night guard at a dentist, there's a chance that the night guard was made at our dental lab.

Our price is significantly lower than what the dentist charges because you don't pay the dentist's markup (usually 200% to 300%). Think of ordering online as the getting the “factory direct” price.

There are some instances where the dentist does provide additional services that justify the markup. For example, if you have jaw issues and you need a dental night guard that helps aligns your teeth and jaw in a certain way, the dentist may need to perform multiple adjustments at the time of fitting.

However, for the majority of people who simply need a night guard to protect against teeth grinding and clenching, our product is exactly the same as what you would get from a dentist.

It is recommended that parents wait until their children are at least 15 years old to obtain night guards for teeth grinding/clenching. Since children are still rapidly developing, their teeth and jaw bones are growing as well. Wearing a custom-fit night guard may interfere with and stunt development of the teeth and jaw. Furthermore, to make a night guard for a child would require bi-monthly adjustments for refitting to allow for that growth. We do not make night guards for anyone under the age of 15 at this time.
